Gorham Bird's Nest Pierced & Gilded Ladle

America
1865
Exceptional and rare sterling silver pierced ladle by Gorham in the ‘Bird's Nest’ pattern, 1865.

One of the rarest and most unique of the naturalistic designs introduced by Gorham, the handle in the form of a branch terminating in three smaller branches supporting a beautifully cast, 3-dimensional bird nest containing 3 gilded eggs, and a fully cast bird with outspread wings perched to the side.

The base of the handle with two large leaves. The round shaped vermeil bowl decorated with pierced stars and scrolls.

Fully marked with Gorham's hallmarks and 'STERLING'.

Measures: 7"

In exceptional condition, some minor losses to gilding on underside of bowl.
